The Hermann Göring Parachute Panzer Division fought at Gela and Priolo, but was forced to withdraw to Messina with air and sea support due to heavy Allied attacks. After the Allies landed in Salerno on September 9, 1943, the division stationed nearby was tasked with repelling the landings, but after a short time had to withdraw to the Volturno-Termoli Line and later to the Gustav Line.
