#JJ2 Royal Flying Corps Grouping Airman 1st Class Fred Rose 13 Squadron
Original WWI Medals, Badges and Photos of Airman 1st Class and Air Gunner 26913 Fred Rose of 13 Squadron Royal Flying Corps / Royal Air Force. No. 13 Squadron was formed at Gosport on 10 January 1915 and preceded to France in October of that year. They were based initially at St. Omer and then Vert Galand, France. They were originally equipped with BE2c aircraft. However by the time Fred served with them beginning in February 1918 they were flying aircraft like the Martinsyde G.100 (Elephant) and R.E. 8. It is not known exactly when Fred joined the RFC but judging by the photographs it appears to be much earlier in the war. He originally joined the Royal Engineers and the two photos of him in RFC maternity jacket and overcoat do not appear to be much later. The photos of him in RFC uniform are likely shortly after he transferred to the RFC. Due to his age, and since he has three service stripes, it can be presumed that these were taken any time after the latter part of 1916. Since Fred was an engineer and expert carpenter it is also presumed that he joined the RFC to maintain aircraft. However in February 1918 he is a Probationary Air Gunner. An Air Gunner was qualified to wear the Observer Wing. It is also interesting to note that No. 13 Squadron was one of the first Army Cooperation Squadrons bombing and strafing targets in conjunction with Army operations. Included in the group are his War and Victory Medals impressed with his number, name and R.F.C.. Two mini-medals, There are three post card photos of him in uniform. One while with the Royal Engineers and two while in the RFC. Three year service stripes, A brass RFC cap badge, A Junior Imperial Constitution League FOR EMPIRE pin made by W.O. Lewis of Birmingham and his named Amalgamated Society of Woodworkers 50 Year Loyalty lapel pin with “1913 – 1968 F. Rose” on back. There is a little cross pendent as well. Not a common pair of medals especially to an Air Gunner. $200
